L3 English l Redemption

In the “Redemption” scene, where Max questions Furiosa on why she left the Green Place, the director uses the aspect of cinematography cleverly to convey the trust-building between the two primary characters. In the scene, the camera cuts to a two-shot between Max and Furiosa who are in the War Rig talking about the Green Place, the director makes the camera begin as a close-up of Furiosa for the audience to understand her past more, this is to show that she is just thinking about her, thought after we cut to Max asking why she left. When it cuts back to Furiosa the camera pans out slowly, this is done to show that she is now allowing herself to trust other people. Although when she says this is for her redemption, it cuts to Nuxx this is done to show he is also looking for redemption, on his blind loyalty to someone/something that has led him the wrong way. When the bug crawls up onto Nuxx’s finger he looks at it for a second before eating it. This shows that he now sees life as a thing to look forward to which is why it takes him a second to eat it. This is because even though this will help sustain him, he still is ending a life and he sees that now. The way the director shows these similarities between Nuxx and Furiosa while keeping them unique in their own aspect. The effect that we as an audience have from this scene is we find how tragic the lives have been for all of the characters, because of this we become more emotionally developed to the cast as a whole. The way this scene works extremely well is because the non-diegetic string gives this swelling feeling in our hearts. So when the music stops on a dime when Furiosa says “redemption” this shows this means so much to her. The subliminal messages we get from this scene hint at the obvious changes going through the whole main cast and they realize that freedom may be coming.

  4. Good work guys! Your explanation of director's purpose and effect on the audience is great -- you demonstrate a good understanding of the ideas in this scene.

"become more emotionally developed" -- could you say this in another way? Also, this is a good opportunity to ask 'so what?' Why is it important that we get attached to these characters?

    Ka rawe :)
